Victor Reader Soft Getting Started Text 1 Welcome to the Bookshare.org edition of the Victor Reader Soft DAISY player. For its community of members, Bookshare.org brings together a wealth of reading material with a great new way to read the books: the DAISY digital talking book software player. The Bookshare.org website offers quick access to accessible digital books. Within minutes of choosing a book to read, you can download it and start reading. The Victor Reader Soft makes navigating DAISY-format books fast and easy: For example, you can: * Go right to a specific page or chapter with only a few keystrokes, * Skim books by paragraphs or pages, * Search for specific words and phrases, or * Leave bookmarks to refer back to at a later time. Reading Bookshare.org books with Victor Reader Soft is one of the benefits of being a member of the Bookshare.org community. Enjoy your reading! The following document gives simple directions for using this software. 2 Hi, and welcome to this Getting Started session with Victor Reader Soft, your new digital talking book player. As you will see, Victor Reader Soft allows you to easily navigate through the Table of Contents and the structure of a book to quickly find the information you need. The book you are reading now will start automatically the first time you use Victor Reader Soft. This Getting Started session will guide you through using Victor Reader Soft for the first time. You will find below the instructions for reading a BookShare NISO book. Before reading a book from your hard disk, you will need to build the bookshelf so that Victor Reader Soft will recognize all the books that are on your hard disk. To do so, press on the Update Bookshelf button in the Open Book dialog. Victor Reader Soft will search your entire disk for BookShare NISO books. You only have to do this procedure the first time you use Victor Reader Soft or when you add new books on your hard disk. Once the bookshelf is updated, the books available on your hard disk will be listed in the Bookshelf list box You can also read a book from your CD-ROM drive. When you insert a BookShare NISO book CD-ROM in your drive, Victor Reader Soft will recognize it and will open it automatically. If there is more than one book on the CD-ROM, the first book will open automatically, and if you want to select a different book, you need to open the Open Book dialog. To do so, press on CTRL+O or select the Open item form the Book Menu. All the books on the CD-ROM will be listed in the Bookshelf list box. You can navigate through the list of available books in the Bookshelf list box using the up and down arrow keys or the mouse pointer. When you have selected the book you want to read, click on the Open button or tab to it and press Enter. The book will be opened and it will appear it the Display Window. To start reading the book, use the "Say All" function of your screen reader. You can adjust the Windows volume in the Settings Menu or by pressing V to increase the volume or SHIFT+V to decrease the volume. The maximum value for the volume is 10 and the minimum value is 0. 3 Let's take a look at the Help feature. This allows you to be more independent as you learn. Victor Reader Soft offers the Key Describer help function. With this feature, you can find out the function associated with each of Victor Reader's keys. To activate this feature, simply press the Key Describer key (D). Then press any other key on the keyboard. Victor Reader Soft will identify the function associated with it. To quit the Key Describer, simply press the Key Describer key again. There are a number of navigation options available, such as: going to a page, going to the beginning of a book and going to the end of the book. To go to a page, select Go to Page from the Navigation Menu or press G. Type in the number of the page you want to reach and press ENTER. To reach the beginning of the book, select Beginning of Book in the Navigation Menu or press CTRL+HOME. To reach the end of the book, select End of Book in the Navigation Menu or press CTRL+END. You can also navigate by local elements, like characters, words, lines, paragraphs or pages. You can select the navigation element in the Navigation Menu. To move by the selected element, use the Next Element or Previous Element items from the Navigation Menu. Note that you can also use the keyboard for element navigation. Use the LEFT arrow and RIGHT arrow to move by characters, CTRL+LEFT arrow and CTRL+RIGHT arrow to move by words, UP arrow and DOWN arrow to move by lines, CTRL+UP arrow and CTRL+DOWN arrow to move by paragraphs, PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN to move by screens, and CTRL+PAGE UP and CTRL+PAGE DOWN to move by pages. Finally, you can navigate by global elements, like chapters, sections, etc. Note that these global elements are also called levels. You can select the navigation level in the Navigation Menu. To move by the selected level, use the Next Heading or Previous Heading from the Navigation Menu. 4 If you are using JAWS, you can activate or deactivate the keyboard by pressing CTRL+ALT+M. To close a book without exiting Victor Reader Soft, go to the Book Menu and select Close or press CTRL+F4. To exit Victor Reader Soft, go to the Book Menu and select Exit or press ALT+F4. When you exit Victor Reader Soft, your current position will be saved for your next session in the same book. We've come to the end of the Getting Started session.
