This software was designed to assist print disabled persons in reading many type of books from the simple leisure book to the most advanced textbooks. Its friendly interface makes it very easy to use. It includes advanced navigation features, display customization, and much more. In addition to its reading features, Victor Reader Soft synchronizes the text display with the voice so you can see the text as it is being read. Also, several user settings are available and are saved automatically so you can customize the software to meet your specific needs. You can easily navigate through the Table of Contents and the structure of the book to quickly find the information you need. This software support Bookshare.org NISO books. You will find below several sections providing information on how to install Victor Reader Soft, a table of the shortcut keys, a short description on how to read a book, a detailed description of the Application window, its menus and dialog boxes and information on how to contact VisuAide. 3 1 Chapter 1 1.1 System Requirements The recommended system requirements for Victor Reader Soft include a personal computer with Windows , 98, NT, 2000 or Millenium and Internet Explorer 5.5 or greater. Processor: 166 MHz, RAM: 64 MB, Available hard disk space for installation: 30 MB, Sound: Windows compatible sound card. 1.2 Compatibility with screen reading software Victor Reader Soft is compatible with most screen reading software. 1.3 Instructions for the installation of Victor Reader Soft You can start the installation by running "Victor Reader Soft Setup.exe" file. You can begin your setup by selecting Victor Reader Soft Setup from the Autorun dialog. A dialog box will be displayed asking you to select the installation language. Victor Reader Soft setup uses standard Windows Install Shield dialogs for ease of use. Most Setup dialogs have Next, Cancel, and Back buttons so you can continue with Setup, exit Setup, or move back to the previous Setup dialog to review or change settings. Please note that you can review any dialog at any time by pressing F2. The first Setup dialog welcomes you to setup. The second Setup dialog displays the License Agreement. To start and stop reading the License Agreement, press F5. Press the TAB key to move to the Yes button and continue with Setup. The third Setup dialog lists Install Options. There are two installation options for Victor Reader Soft Setup: Automatic Installation or Custom Installation. Automatic Installation The Automatic installation will install Victor Reader Soft with the default options. Custom Installation The Custom installation will let you choose which components and where to install Victor Reader Soft on your system. The next dialog to be displayed for the Custom Installation is Select Options. This dialog allows you to select the components you want to install. By default, the Getting Started and the Reference Guide are selected. The next dialog to be displayed is Choose Destination Location. This dialog allows you to specify the folder in which Victor Reader Soft will be installed. The default location is C:\Program Files\Victor Reader Soft (if Windows is installed on your C drive). If you want to choose another location, select the Browse button. The next dialog displayed is Select Program Folder dialog. It is the same for both Automatic and Custom installations and allows you to specify the name of the Start Menu folder in which Setup will install Victor Reader Soft Start Menu items. Next is the Setup Status dialog which lets you know the status of the installation process. Please note that you can cancel installation at any time by pressing the Cancel button or the Escape key. Victor Reader Soft will ask you to confirm that you want to exit the Setup program. If you choose OK, the installation will be cancelled. If you choose Cancel, installation will continue. Finally the InstallShield Wizard Complete dialog box will be displayed. Select Finish to complete the installation. You might need to restart the computer before you can use Victor Reader Soft. If so, a prompt asking you if you wish to restart your computer now will appear. Select Yes if you want to restart your computer now or No to restart the computer later. 4 1.4 Maintenance Setup for Victor Reader Soft Maintenance Setup allows you to make changes or corrections to the currently installed version of Victor Reader Soft. It also allows you to uninstall Victor Reader Soft. There are three Maintenance Setup options: Modify This option allows you to change currently installed components. Repair This option allows you to reinstall Victor Reader Soft with current settings, replacing existing files, which might be damaged or corrupted. Remove This option allows you to remove all Victor Reader Soft components, including the Victor Reader Soft folder. 1.5 Shortcut Keys Here is a list of all the shortcut keys you can use in Victor Reader Soft. These keys will be described later. If you press it once, you will hear "Sleep off". If you press it twice, the period will be 15 min. If you keep pressing the 9 key, the sleep period will continue to increase by 15 min until it reaches 60 minutes then it will turn off again and the cycle will start over. 6 2 Chapter 2 2.1 Reading a Bookshare.org NISO book 2.1.1 The first time you start Victor Reader Soft The first time you use this software, you will need to update the bookshelf so that Victor Reader Soft will recognize all the books that are present on your hard disk. To do so, press on the Update Bookshelf button. Victor Reader Soft will search your entire disk for Bookshare.org NISO books. You only have to do this procedure the first time you use Victor or when you add new books on your hard disk. 2.1.2 Selecting and Opening a new book You can read a book from your CD-ROM drive or your hard disk. When you insert a Bookshare.org NISO book CD-ROM in your drive, Victor Reader Soft will recognize it automatically. To select a book from your hard disk, go to the Source list box and select Local drives. The books available on your hard disk will be listed in the Bookshelf list box. To select a book from a CD-ROM, select the CD-ROM source from the Source list box and all the books on the disk will be listed in the Bookshelf list box. You can navigate through the list of available books using the up and down arrow keys or the mouse pointer. When you have selected the book you want to read, click on the Open button or tab to it and press Enter. The book will be opened and it will appear it the Book Window. Victor Reader Soft will say Book Loaded when ready. 2.1.3 Adjusting the volume You can adjust the Windows volume in the Settings Menu or by pressing V to increase the volume or SHIFT+V to decrease the volume. The maximum value for the volume is 10 and the minimum value is 0. 2.1.4 Setting user preferences Once you have adjusted the volume, you can adjust how Victor Reader Soft displays the book in the Book Window. You can modify the text color, background color and font size. To set your preferences, go to the Display item in the Settings Menu and select Properties from the Display Submenu. A Properties dialog box will open. To modify the text or the background colors, move to the combo boxes located after each items. You have a choice of 16 different colors. When you choose a color, the Preview Window will show it on a sample text. To modify the font size, move to the Font Size combo box. You have a choice of 5 different font sizes. For more information on this dialog box, please refer to section 3.3.5. Please note that your chosen settings will be saved for your next session. Settings can be customized for each user in the User Profile dialog box. When you add a new user, you need to set that user's preferences in the Properties dialog box. 7 2.1.5 Navigation in the book There are a number of navigation options available, such as: going to a page, going to the beginning of a book and going to the end of the book. To go to a page, select the element from the Navigation Menu or press G. Type in the number of the page you want to reach and press Enter. To reach the beginning of the book, select the element in the Navigation Menu or press CTRL+HOME. To reach the end of the book, select the element in the Navigation Menu or press CTRL+END. You can also navigate by element, level or with the Global Navigation Window. Element You can select the navigation element in the Navigation Menu. To move by the selected element, use the Next Element or Previous Element from the Navigation Menu. You can also use the keyboard to navigate by element. To have more information on this item, please refer to section 3.3.3. Level You can select the navigation level in the Navigation Menu. To move by the selected level, use the Next Heading or Previous Heading from the Navigation Menu. To have more information on this item, please refer to section 3.3.3. Global Navigation Window The Global Navigation Window is opened from the Navigation Menu or by using CTRL+N. It lists the sections of the book by the level selected in the Navigation Level Submenu. The list is displayed in a tree form view. You can use the up and down arrows to navigate through it, the right and left arrows to expand or contract the list and CTRL+Enter to go to selected title. To close the window, use the Escape key or press CTRL+F4. To have more information on this item, please refer to section 3.3.3. 2.1.6 Inserting, deleting and reaching Annotations Annotation includes only bookmarks for this Bookshare.org version. You can insert, delete or got to an annotation at any time when reading a book. Go to the Navigation Menu and select the type of annotation you want to insert, delete or reach. When you select it, a submenu will open allowing you to insert, reach, delete, list and delete all the annotations. To have a complete description of these items, please refer to section 3.3.4. You can also insert a Quick Bookmark to save the location where you stopped reading. Press CTRL+Q until you hear 'Quick Bookmark inserted'. To go to the Quick Bookmark, press the Q key. You will hear 'Reaching Quick Bookmark'. To have more information on these this item, please refer to section 3.3.4. 2.1.7 Closing a book and exiting Victor Reader Soft To close a book without exiting Victor Reader Soft, go to the Book Menu and select Close or press CTRL+F4. To exit Victor Reader Soft, go to the Book Menu and select Exit or press ALT+F4. 2.1.8 Resume reading When you exit Victor Reader Soft, your position, all annotations and user settings will be saved for your next session in the same book. Use the Navigation Menu to return to a bookmark and resume reading. To have more information on how to reach an annotation, please refer to section 3.3.4. 8 3 Chapter 3 3.1 Application Window The Victor Reader Soft Application window contains a Title Bar, a Menu Bar, a Book Window and an Information Window. 3.1.1 Title Bar The Title Bar is found at the top of the Application window. It gives you the name of the application and the title of the book currently opened. 3.1.2 Menu Bar The Menu Bar is located below the title bar and contains the menu titles. These are, from left to right, the Book Menu, Edit Menu, Navigation Menu, Annotation Menu, Settings Menu and Help Menu. Please refer to section 3.3 for a detailed description of these menus and items. 3.1.3 Book Window The default size of the Book Window is about three quarters of the screen, but it can be resized in the Settings Menu. It is used to display the text of the book currently opened. When you read a book, the display will scroll down to let you see the text being read at the same time you hear it. The display will scroll down and a caret will mark the current position in the text. 3.1.4 Information Window The Information Window displays status information for an entered command. For more information on this item, please refer to section 3.3.5. 3.2 Open Book Dialog Box When you start Victor Reader Soft, the Open Book dialog box will be displayed. The Open Book dialog contains two list boxes and tree buttons. The list boxes are: Bookshelf (in the top left corner) and Source (in the top right corner). The buttons, located under the Source list box, are Open, Update Bookshelf and Cancel. 3.2.1 Bookshelf List Box This list box lists all the books currently located on the hard disk or the loaded CD depending on the source selected in the Source list box. To navigate through the available books, use the mouse pointer or the up and down arrow keys. You can use ALT+B to access the Bookshelf list. 3.2.2 Source List Box This list box allows you to select the source where Victor Reader Soft will search for Bookshare.org NISO books. You can select either Local drives or CD-ROM. If you select Local drives, the books listed in the Bookshelf list box will be those located on your hard disk after updating the bookshelf. If you select CD-ROM, the books listed in the Bookshelf list box will be those found on the CD-ROM currently in the drive. To navigate through the available sources you can use the mouse pointer or the up and down arrow keys. You can use ALT+S to access the Source list. 3.2.3 Open Button This button opens a book selected in the Bookshelf list box. 3.2.4 Update Bookshelf Button This button is used to search your entire hard disk for Daisy format books. You need to update the bookshelf the first time you start Victor Reader Soft or when you add new books to your hard disk. 3.2.5 Cancel Button This button is used to close the Open Book dialog box without making modifications. 9 3.3 Menus 3.3.1 Book Menu The Book Menu contains the following items: Open, Close, Info, Eject and Exit. Here is a short description of these items and their functions. Open (CTRL+O) The Open item opens a book. If you select Open from the Book Menu, when a book is already open, it closes the current book and brings up the Open Book dialog. If no books are open, it will bring up the Open Book dialog. You can select the book you want to open from the Bookshelf list box by using the arrow keys and then pressing Enter, or by moving to the Open button using the TAB key and then pressing Enter. You can also select the source of the book (CD-ROM or Local drives) and update the bookshelf from this dialog box. To have more information on this dialog box, please refer to section .2. Close (CTRL+F4) The Close item is used to close the currently open book. Info (I) The Info item is used to get information on the book and on the software. When you select this item from the menu or by pressing the I key, you will hear all the information in the following order: total number of pages, total number of annotations (bookmarks and text notes), number of books on the disk and About Victor Reader Soft. Eject (CTRL+E) The Eject item is used to eject a CD-ROM from the CD-ROM drive. Exit (ALT+F4) The Exit item is used to quit the program. 3.3.2 Edit Menu The Edit Menu contains the following items: Cancel, Find and Find Next. Here is a short description of these items and their functions. Cancel (Esc) The Cancel item is used to cancel an action, exit a dialog box or window without making modifications. Find (CTRL+F) The Find item is used to search the entire book. When you select this item from the Edit Menu, or press CTRL+F, the Find dialog box will be displayed. Type the words or characters you want to search for in the book in the Find field. You can narrow your search by selecting Match case and/or Titles only. Select the direction, Up or Down, you want and press on the Find button. To exit without executing the search, press on the Cancel button. Victor Reader Soft will search for the next occurrence of the words or characters and will move the focus to that location. Find Next (F3) The Find Next item is used to search for the next occurrence of the words or characters entered in the Find dialog box. 10 3.3.3 Navigation Menu The Navigation Menu contains the following items: Go To Page, Beginning of Book, End of Book, Navigation Element (which lists markups such as Paragraph, Word or Line), Next Element, Previous Element, Element Info, Navigation Level (which lists up to a total of 6 levels), Next Heading, Previous Heading, Level Info, Where Am I?, History and Global Navigation Window. Here is a short description of these items and their functions. Go To Page (G) The Go to Page item is used to reach a specific page in the book. You can choose it from the Navigation Menu, or by pressing the G key. Then type the number of the page you want to reach and press the Enter to move to the new position. Victor Reader Soft will go to the requested page. If the page number you entered doesn't exists, you will hear the message "Page X doesn't exists" where X is the page number and Victor Reader Soft will move back up to 5 pages before the requested number if possible. To cancel, use the Escape key. Beginning of Book (CTRL+HOME) The Beginning of Book item is used to reach the beginning of the book. When you select it from the Navigation Menu, or by pressing the CTRL+HOME keys, you will hear "Beginning of book", and Victor Reader Soft will move to the beginning of the book. End of Book (CTRL+END) The End of Book item is used to reach the end of the book. When you select it from the Navigation Menu, or press the CTRL+END keys, you will hear "End of book", and Victor Reader Soft will move to the end of the book. Navigation Element The Navigation Element item has a submenu which lists markups such as Paragraph, Word, Phrase or Page when available in the book. It allows you to select the element you wish to navigate by. You can select these elements by mouse pointer as they are listed automatically in the Navigation Menu and Navigation Element Submenu. You can also use the keyboard to move by the selected element. For a list of keyboard navigation key, see section 1.5. Next Element The Next Element item is used to go to the next element selected in the Navigation Element Submenu. Previous Element The Previous Element item is used to return to the previous element selected in the Navigation Element Submenu. Element Info The Element Info item tells you the element currently selected. Navigation Level The Navigation Level item has a submenu listing up to 6 available navigation levels. It allows you to select the level you wish to navigate by. You can choose a level as they are listed automatically in the Navigation Menu and Navigation Level Submenu. It will only give you the choices that are available in the currently opened book Next Heading The Next Heading item is used to move to the next heading in the currently selected level. Victor Reader Soft will move to the next heading and read it. If you have chosen Level 1, it will move to the next heading of type 1. If you have chosen Level 2, it will move to the next heading of type 1.1, and so on. Previous Heading The Previous Heading item is used to return to the previous heading on the currently chosen level. Victor Reader Soft will move to the previous heading and read it. If you have chosen Level 1, it will move to the previous heading of type . If you have chosen Level 2, it will move to the previous heading of type 1.1, and so on. Level Info The Level Info item tells you the current level. Where Am I? (W) The Where Am I? item gives you information on your current position in the book. It tells you the current page number and level. History (3) The History item allows you to quickly return to places you have recently navigated. Victor Reader Soft memorizes the last moves. Regardless of the element involved (navigation to a page, bookmark, heading, etc.), Victor Reader Soft will record the movement and list them on demand. Use the LEFT or RIGHT ARROW to move through the list and press Enter to go to the selected place. The history is reset to 0 when you change the book. Global Navigation Window (CTRL+N) The Global Navigation Window item is used to navigate through the sections of the book. Use the up or down arrows to move through the items of the tree view list and the right and left arrows to change the selected level. You will navigate in the list by the current and previous levels. For example, if there is more than one level in the book, and you have selected level 3 in the Navigation Level Submenu, you will hear the level 1 titles, level 2 titles and level 3 titles. When you have found the title you want, double click on the title with the mouse or press the CTRL+Enter keys to close the Global Navigation Window and go to the selected title. To close the window, press the escape key. Please note that you can use the Find and the Find Next options in this window. The Titles item only will be selected by default and it will search by the selected level. 11 3.3.4 Annotations Menu The Annotations Menu contains the following items: All Annotations (which contains: Go to Annotation, Remove Annotation, Annotation List and Remove All Annotations), Bookmark (which contains: Go to Bookmark, Insert Bookmark, Remove Bookmark and Bookmark List) and Quick Bookmark (which contains: Go to Quick Bookmark and Insert Quick Bookmark). Here is a short description of these items and their functions. All Annotations The All Annotations item has a submenu which contains the following items: Go to Annotation, Remove Annotation, Annotation List and Remove All Annotations. It allows you to reach a desired annotation (only Bookmark is available for this software version), remove an annotation, hear a list of all the annotations in the book and remove all the annotations. Go to Annotation When you want to go to a specific annotation, select Go to Annotation from the All Annotations Submenu, type in the annotation number and then press Enter. Victor Reader Soft will go to the annotation. Remove Annotation When you want to remove a specific annotation, select Remove Annotation from the All Annotations Submenu, type in the annotation number and press Enter. You will then hear the message "Annotation X removed" where X is the number of the annotation. Annotation List This item is used to list all the annotations in the book. Use the right and left arrows to scroll through them. Remove All Annotations This item is used to remove all the annotations in a book. When you select it from the menu, you will hear "Annotations removed". Bookmark The Bookmark item has a submenu which contains the following items: Go to Bookmark, Insert Bookmark, Remove Bookmark and Bookmark List. It allows you to reach a desired bookmark, remove a bookmark and hear a list of all the bookmarks in the book. Go to Bookmark (B) When you want to go to a specific bookmark, select Go to Bookmark from the Bookmark Submenu, or press the B key, type in the bookmark number and press Enter. Victor Reader Soft will then go to the bookmark. If the bookmark doesn't exist, you will hear the message "Bookmark X doesn't exist" where X is the number of the bookmark. Insert Bookmark (CTRL+B) To insert a bookmark, select Insert Bookmark from the Bookmark Submenu or press CTRL+B, type in the bookmark number and press Enter. If you press Enter without entering a number, a new bookmark number will be automatically selected. You will hear the message "Bookmark X inserted" where X is the number of the bookmark. If the number is already assigned to a bookmark you will hear "Bookmark already exists". Remove Bookmark (SHIFT+B) When you want to remove a specific bookmark, select Remove Bookmark from the Bookmark Submenu, type in the bookmark number and press Enter. You will hear the message "X removed" where X is the number of the bookmark. If the bookmark doesn't exist, you will hear the message "Bookmark X doesn't exist" where X is the number of the bookmark. Bookmark List (ALT+B) This item lists all the bookmarks in the book. Use the right and left arrows to navigate through them. Press Enter to reach that bookmark or press on the Cancel key to return to your current position in the book. Quick Bookmark The Quick Bookmark item has a submenu which contains the following items: Go to Quick Bookmark and Insert Quick Bookmark. To insert a quick bookmark, press Ctrl + Q key or select Insert Quick Bookmark from the Quick Bookmark Submenu. You will hear the message "Quick bookmark inserted". To reach it, press the Q key or select Go to Quick Bookmark from the Quick Bookmark Submenu. 12 3.3.5 Settings Menu The Settings Menu contains the following items: Volume Up, Volume Down, Display (which contains: Properties, Windows Size and Clear Information Window), User Profile and Language. Here is a short description of these items and their functions. Volume Up (V) The Volume Up item is used to raise the Windows volume. When you select it from the Settings Menu, or press the V key, you will hear the current volume position. Each time you press V or select it from the Settings Menu, the volume will increase by 1. The maximum value is 10. Volume Down (SHIFT+V) The Volume Down item is used to lower the Windows volume. When you select it from the Settings Menu, or press the SHIFT+V keys, you will hear the current volume position. Each time you press SHIFT+V or select it from the Settings Menu, the volume will decrease by 1. The minimum value is 0. Display The Display item has a submenu which contains the following items: Properties, Windows size and Clear Information Window. It allows you to change display properties, the size of the information and the book windows, and clear the information in the Information Window. Properties (CTRL+P) When you select this item from the Display Submenu, or press CTRL+P, the dialog box Properties opens. This dialog has three combo boxes and a preview window. From this dialog, you can change the color of the text, and the background. The available colors are: Aqua, Black, Blue, Fuchsia, Green, Grey, Lime, Maroon, Navy, Olive, Purple, Red, Silver, Teal, White and Yellow. To change the text color, use the TAB key to move to the Text Color combo box, use the arrow keys to scroll trough the available colors. The text in the Preview window will show the color selected. To change the color of the background, use the same method as for the text. You can also change the font size. To change the font size, use the TAB key to move to the combo box Font Size and then use the arrow keys to select the size you want. The choices are: x-small, small, medium, large and x-large. Press on Cancel or Esc to exit the dialog without making modifications. The settings set in this dialog overwrite the settings of the original text. When you change settings, Victor Reader Soft will save them for your next session. If there is more than one user, you need to choose settings for each user. Windows Size (CTRL+S) When you select this item from the Display Submenu, the Set Windows Size dialog is displayed. In this dialog you can choose the percentage of the screen you wish to use for the Book and the Information windows. Simply type the number you want or use the scroll buttons. The Information Window is used to display status information on the action you are currently performing. The Book Window is used to display the book you are currently reading. Clear Information Window The item Clear Information Window is used to clear the information in the Information Window. User Profile (CTRL+U) The User Profile item allows you to select a different user from the list, add a new user or remove a user. When you select User Profile in the Setting Menu, the User Profile dialog box is displayed. The title bar tells you the current user. To select a user from the list box, use the Up and Down arrows or click on the user with the mouse. Go to the OK button and press Enter to accept the change and close the dialog box. To add a user, select the Add button. A user will be added to the list. Please note that you cannot change the name of the user. If you want to delete a user, select it from the list and then press on the Remove button. Press the Cancel button to exit and close the dialog box without making modifications. The user display settings will be saved for the next session. When you change users, you also load the settings for that user. 13 3.3.6 Help Menu The Help Menu contains the following items: Key Describer, Getting Started, Quick Reference, Reference Guide, About Victor Reader Soft, About Daisy and About Bookshare.org. Here is a short description of these items and their functions. Key Describer (D) The Key Describer item gives you the information on a key without performing an action. When you select it from the Help Menu, or press the D key, you will hear the message "Key Describer on". Then press on any key. You will hear the function of the key or combination of keys without executing it. Disable the Key Describer by pressing the D key or reselecting it in the Help Menu. Getting Started (F2) The Getting Started item will give you access to the Getting Started Guide. Quick Reference (CTRL+F1) The Quick Reference item will give you access to the Quick Reference which contains a list of all the functions and their shortcut keys. Move through the functions using the Up and Down arrows. To access the shortcut key associated to that function, use the Right and Left arrows. Reference Guide (F1) The Reference Guide item will give you access to the Victor Reader Soft Reference Guide. About Victor Reader Soft The About Victor Reader Soft item gives you the current version and information of the software. About Daisy The About Daisy item gives you information on the Daisy Consortium. About Bookshare.org The About Bookshare.org item gives you information on Bookshare.org. 3.4 Getting Help The Help Menu in the menu bar of the Victor Reader Soft application window gives you a selection of help choices. The choices are Key Describer, the Getting Started session, the Quick Reference page, which gives you the shortcut keys, and the Reference Guide, which gives a detailed description of the software and how to use it. Press on CTRL+SHIFT+M to toggle the voice of JAWS when using Victor Reader Soft, and on CTRL+SHIFT+T to toggle the keystroke echo in text notes. When you activate the keystroke echo, the voice must be active. If you desactivate the voice without desactivating the keystroke echo, you will need to press twice on CRTL+SHIFT+T to activate the keystroke echo again. The state of the voice is memorized when you disactivate it. Please note that these settings will not be saved if you quit Victor Reader Soft or move to another application without quitting Victor Reader Soft.
