About International Search and Download

Which books are available to those with a print disability who reside outside of the United States?

Many of the books in the Bookshare.org collection are available to people living outside the United States. As of May 1, 2007, about 15% of the books in the collection are available worldwide. Of those, 1300 are in Spanish and 4600 in English.

The books that are available worldwide include:
1)Those where the publisher or author has specifically granted Bookshare.org permission to distribute the book outside of the United States.
2)Those that are in the Public Domain, which means they are not covered by copyright. Most of these were written before 1925, some as recently as the 1940s.

Bookshare.org also has books that are available only in specific countries, either by copyright law or by permissions restrictions. For example, we have a large number of books scanned under a copyright exemption in the U.S. Those books cannot be provided outside the U.S. without specific permission. We are working with publishers and authors to obtain these permissions and to increase the numbers of books available to more people in more countries.

How do international visitors search for and download books that are available worldwide?

We have implemented International Search as a user choice on the Advanced Search page. One of the selections on the menu under Copyright Domain is "Available Worldwide." When you include this selection in addition to the rest of your advanced search criteria (such as an author’s name or books on gardening), the books returned by the search will all be available worldwide. You will then be able to find the specific books that interest you.

Simple Search and Advanced Search are both available from the front page of Bookshare.org, and do not require you to be logged in. This makes it possible for anyone to search our collection before deciding to sign up as a member. Non-members can also download certain books (those identified as "Public Domain"). Copyrighted books require that you sign up for a Bookshare.org membership before downloading. This involves proving you have a qualifying disability, agreeing to our user agreement and paying an annual subscription fee. More information for becoming a Bookshare.org member.

To see the books that are available worldwide, choose Books Available Worldwide on the Books to Search menu on the Advanced Search Page.
