Help
If you have a question or need help, you may find what you need below. Support questions are regularly updated
based on common inquiries. If you are new to Bookshare.org, you may want to visit the Getting Started page.
We do not list a number for telephone technical support! Because we are an exclusively online service, we find that our members can most easily state their concerns via Email by writing to support@bookshare.org. If we determine that a phone call will most efficiently address your issue, we will gladly contact you at a time that is convenient for you.
We encourage you to join our Bookshare.org discussion list. Often, your best source for good hands-on
information will be other members of the community. On the Bookshare.org email listserv community members can
share tips about using Bookshare.org, discuss books they are reading, and talk about print access topics such as
scanning or reading technology. To join the Bookshare.org general discussion list, send a blank Email to bookshare-discuss-request@freelists.org.

Top Questions
I registered as a Bookshare.org member and received a password via email. Why can't I download
copyrighted books?
After the first step of registration you must complete two additional steps before you can download
copyrighted materials. The second step is submitting written certification of your print-related disability.
Find out more about proof of disability. If you have submitted your certification of disability, please allow
sufficient time for the form to get to us. Weekends and holidays may delay the receipt of your materials via U.S.
mail. You will receive an email from us once we verify your proof of disability.
The third step is submitting payment for your annual subscription. If you are joining as an individual member,
find out more about Individual Subscriptions.
If you belong to an organization or school that you believe has purchased a Bookshare.org subscription for
you, please contact that organization directly to confirm that they have provided your name to us. If we have
received your name and correct current email address from the organization, you should have already received an
email inviting you to take advantage of this subscription.
If you represent an organization or a school and would like more information about organization memberships,
visit the Group and School Accounts page.
If, after completing all the necessary steps, you are still unable to download copyrighted books from the
website, please contact us via email at support@bookshare.org.
I've downloaded a book, but now I can't open it. What kind of files are these?
The Bookshare.org books are "packed" (encrypted and compressed) in the file that you download. You will
need the Unpack Tool to unpack the books and save them in a readable file format. To download and install the
Unpack Tool, please visit the download page.
After installing the Unpack Tool, launch the tool either by selecting a "packed book" or by going to the
Program list from your Start Menu.
When you download your next book, your browser should prompt you with a question of whether you want to save
or open the book. After saving the book to your local drive, you will be prompted as to whether you want to open
the book. If you choose open, the Unpack Tool should launch automatically.
When unpacking a copyrighted book, the Unpack Tool will prompt you for a password. This is the same password
that you use to access the Bookshare.org web site. For books in the public domain, no password will be necessary.
If you have changed your password since downloading the book, you will need to enter the password that you were
using when you originally downloaded the book.
When I try to download something from Bookshare.org, even the Unpack tool, it doesn't seem to work. I
get a saved copy of the web page or nothing at all. What's wrong?
There is a known problem in Internet Explorer which may occur on your system. The problem is that opening a
file directly from a web site doesn't always work. If you experience this problem, first save the file to your
hard drive, and then open it from your hard drive.
Internet Explorer will present you with a dialog box that offers a choice of opening the file or saving it.
Select save the file and on the following screen, enter a folder name where you would like to put it. If you
aren't sure where to save it, you can always save a file to your Desktop where it will be easy to find.
I use Netscape 4.7 or 6 as my browser and the Unpack tool
is unable to open any book files I've downloaded. What's wrong?
For users running Netscape 4.7 and 6 with AdSubtract installed,
AdSubtract will corrupt file downloads unless bookshare.org is on
the proxy exceptions list. Open Netscape, open the Edit menu, select
Preferences, double click on Advanced, select Proxies, and enter
"bookshare.org" into the field labeled "No Proxy
For".
How do I read a book that is in the DAISY format?
The DAISY format is the digital talking book standard. You can easily read a DAISY book with the Victor
Reader Soft Bookshare.org Edition DAISY reader that is provided for download with your membership. Almost all assistive technology
products that support text reading support our DAISY books. It is also possible to open our files in leading web browsers like Internet
Explorer and Firefox, and use a screen reader and/or screen magnifier to read the text.
How do I download the Victor Reader Soft DAISY reader?
For detailed instructions, visit the download page.
I live outside of the United States. Can I become a member?
We now support international members, but only for those books where we have explicit permission from publishers or authors to do so. Due to U.S. copyright law, most current
Bookshare.org books, those scanned under our copyright law exemption, are only available to people who have a United States
address.
I have trouble reading the Bookshare.org web site screen. Can I change the colors or font sizes?
Most web browsers, such as Internet Explorer, have the ability to override the settings dictated by the html
code of the web page you are viewing. Usually, you can find commands for doing this under Accessibility Options.
The foreground and background color as well as font size can be set to the preferences that make it easiest for
you to read the screen.
I have scanned books, but I didn't proofread them. Does Bookshare.org want them?
Yes! Please submit your scanned books to Bookshare.org. Our volunteer community will proofread your book. However,
we are not interested in receiving textbooks that have not been carefully proofread.
