Volunteer Frequently Asked Questions

What do Bookshare.org volunteers do?

Basically, volunteers ensure that the widest possible selection of accessible books is made available to people with visual and other print disabilities. Volunteers work on computers to:

  • Build the collection by scanning books and submitting them over the Web.
  • Check submitted books for quality.
  • Review book information, synopses, and classification.
  • Convert electronic books into formats required for publishing on Bookshare.org.

What are the required skills for a volunteer?

Any U.S. resident over 15 years of age can volunteer. The only other qualifications are a passion for books and basic computer skills, including use of a web browser and basic word processing.

Do I need to own a scanner?

No. Volunteers who don't scan their own books contribute by helping prepare the scans of others. Volunteers only need a computer and an Internet connection.

I don't have a visual impairment or print disability. Can I still help?

Yes! Bookshare.org's volunteer community includes both qualified members who will access books through the service and individuals who do not qualify but want to help make more books accessible.

Where can I volunteer?

From home, school, work, or anywhere you can connect to the Internet. Volunteers in the San Francisco Bay area can also volunteer at the Bookshare.org offices in Palo Alto, California.

What's the minimum time commitment?

We encourage volunteers to commit at least a few hours a week. However, we are quite flexible and will work with you to find a schedule that meets your needs. We are also happy to work with you on one-time service projects.

When can I volunteer?

Any time you can access the Internet over a computer, you can volunteer with Bookshare.org.
