Embossed Braille Books

Braille Institute Logo In partnership with the Braille Press of Braille Institute of America. Braille books originating from the Bookshare.org digital Braille files can be ordered in embossed Braille form and mailed directly to you or as a gift. These embossed books can be ordered by anyone in the United States, as you do not need to be a Bookshare.org member to order an embossed Braille book.

The Braille Press is the largest publisher of Braille materials on the West Coast, and its team of Library of Congress certified Braille transcribers and proofreaders produces more than 13 million pages of Braille each year for businesses, schools, government agencies and individuals across the nation.

Embossing Options

Since Bookshare.org books originate as scanned files, all books are assigned a quality rating that indicates the level of scanning errors in the book.

  • Excellent (almost no errors)
  • Good (some errors)
  • Fair (many errors, but legible throughout)

View samples of book quality ratings.

Embossing options are described below. Only books of Excellent or Good quality can be ordered embossed. Newspapers and magazines cannot be ordered embossed.

"Scan Quality" refers to a book that is embossed directly from the Bookshare.org file, without any additional proofreading to correct any missing formatting or remaining scanning errors. Note that any Scan Quality book may be unformatted text, and may contain errors, including, but not limited to errors due to character recognition or missing pages.

  • Excellent and Good quality books are available in Scan Quality embossed Braille.

"Formatted Scan Quality" refers to a book that originated from a Bookshare.org file, which has been formatted by a certified transcriber. Formatted Scan Quality will include an abbreviated title page with key information, a table of contents with corresponding Braille page numbers, page numbering consistent with interpoint pagination, chapter headings and corrected line and page breaks as necessary. Note that Formatted Scan Quality books may still contain errors based on the original scanned file, including, but not limited to errors due to character recognition or missing pages. Read more about formatted scan quality.

  • Only Excellent quality books are available in Formatted Scan Quality embossed Braille.

Fair quality books are only available in digital format to subscribing members; they are not available in embossed Braille format.
