The Last Victim

by Karen Robards

Electrifying suspense, cutting-edge psychological insight, and an unforgettably sensuous love story--these are the trademarks of Karen Robards's sizzling novels. Now the New York Times bestselling author launches a red-hot new paranormal romantic thriller series featuring the fascinating Dr. Charlotte Stone, a serial killer expert whose extraordinary powers lead her from ecstasy to terror. THE LAST VICTIM Dr. Charlotte Stone sees what others do not. A sought-after expert in criminal pathology, Charlie regularly sits face-to-face with madmen. Obsessed with learning what makes human monsters commit terrible crimes, Charlie desires little else from life--no doubt because when she was sixteen, she herself survived a serial killer's bloodbath: A man butchered the family of Charlie's best friend, Holly, then left the girl's body on a seaside boardwalk one week later. Because of the information Charlie gave police, the Boardwalk Killer went underground. She kept to herself her eerie postmortem visions of Holly and her mother. And even years later, knowing her contact with ghosts might undermine her credibility as a psychological expert, Charlie tells no one about the visits she gets from the spirit world. Now all-too-handsome FBI agent Tony Bartoli is telling Charlie that a teenage girl is missing, her family slaughtered. Bartoli suspects that after fifteen years, the Boardwalk Killer--or a sick copycat with his M.O.--is back. Time is running short for an innocent, kidnapped girl, and Bartoli pleads for Charlie's help. This is the one case Charlie shouldn't go near. But she also knows that she may be the one person in the world who can stop this vicious killer. For Charlie--whose good looks disguise a world of hurt, vulnerability, and potent psychic gifts--a frantic hunt for a madman soon becomes a complex test of cunning, passions, and secrets. Aiding Dr. Stone on her quest to catch a madman is a ghostly presence with bad intentions: the fiery spirit of seductive bad boy Michael Garland who refuses to be ignored, though in his cat and mouse game they may both lose their hearts. Dr. Charlotte Stone sees what others do not. And she sees the Boardwalk Killer coming for her. From the Hardcover edition.

Loving Julia

by Karen Robards

"You'll have to learn to speak, to dress, to conduct yourself as a lady." Those orders were intoned by Sebastian, the cold haughty Earl of Moorland to Jewel Combs, the cockney commoner defiantly facing him in his luxurious drawing room. Despite his icy demeanor, Jewel couldn't help but notice that the Earl was a breathtakingly handsome man. Still, the only thing that checked her saucy reply was the realization that the Earl's outlandish plans would give her a home, and she would never be hungry, shivering, or frightened in dark dockside alleys ever again. Fate had brought Jewel to the mansion on Grosvenor Square; now she was going to grab the gold ring of chance and become "Julia Stratham," a genuine upper-crust, silk-and-lace aristocrat. She didn't know why blue-blooded Sebastian had accepted the challenge to transform her from a diamond in the rough into a glittering gem. She did know she had a surprise in store of her own: She would teach this titled nobleman that although she wasn't a lady, she was all woman... and the one with whom he was going to madly, unwisely, and passionately fall in love.

She did it for David, the son who could never know the price she paid to protect him, would never see her scars...Suddenly Maggy's hard-won control shattered when Nick King came back to claim her. She couldn't afford to remember the soul-searing passion she'd known so long ago in the arms of the only man she'd ever loved. Obsession

Obsession

by Karen Robards

Katharine Lawrence has no idea what hit her. The attack came out of nowhere. Only hours earlier she had been enjoying a girls-only weekend with an old college friend. Now she finds herself lying bound and gagged on her kitchen floor, staring with terrified eyes at her friend Lisa while two masked gunmen search her house for - what? She doesn't know. She knows only that, unless they can escape, whatever it is they are searching for could end up getting both her and Lisa killed. But Katharine's nightmare is just beginning. When she awakens in the hospital, her nose crushed, her body battered, her brain tells her that things aren't right - and it's not the attack that's disorienting her. She doesn't recognize herself when she looks in the mirror: her slim body, her manicured hands, her blond bob. And the smiling, handsome doctor at her bedside - Dr. Dan Howard - is familiar, but in a totally unfamiliar way. Perhaps the trauma of the attempt on her life has given her some kind of weird amnesia. She's twenty-nine, the special assistant to the head of the CIA, and she's lucky to be alive. She also knows she can trust no one. Acting on instinct, Katharine runs for her life, with Dan, her newfound protector, at her side. By turns grateful and unnerved by his presence, and unable to shake a feeling of profound dread, she allows him to spirit her to a secluded safe house. Instead of finding a haven, they stumble into a tangled web of government conspiracy, and Katharine is left confused, frightened, and desperate to uncover the truth. As the pair is drawn further into this shadowy world where almost nothing is as it seems, as fear gives way to a firestorm of attraction, the cat-and-mouse game grows more deadly, and soon both their lives are at stake.

by Karen Robards

The rolling fields of Shelby County are home to some of the finest horseflesh and bluest blood in Kentucky. With its rural beauty and tranquil lifestyle, it is easy to see why the locals call it Paradise County. But beneath the serene exterior lies a dark underside, and an evil that threatens everyone who touches it. Alexandra Haywood and her younger sister, Neely, have always loved Whistledown, the family's magnificent Shelby County horse farm. After their billionaire father's sudden and tragic death, the devastated Alex returns to Whistledown to try to make peace with her memories -- and to oversee the selling of their gorgeous home. For the family fortune is now a shambles and, like almost everything else the Haywoods own, Whistledown has to go. But Joe Welch, the sexy, handsome farm manager, refuses to cooperate. When Alex fires him, he tells her he has an unbreakable contract and can't be let go. For years Joe has worked to make Whistledown's stables flourish while he struggled to keep his own dreams alive, and no rich rhymes-with-witch is going to threaten his livelihood -- or his family life. Ever since his wife betrayed him years ago, Joe has raised his three kids alone and did it damn well. Now, his always dependable sixteen-year-old son Eli has become hopelessly infatuated with teenage wild child Neely. Joe refuses to let his boy get caught up with Neely -- a nose stud and penchant for illegal substances among her less desirable traits -- and he tells Alex in no uncertain terms. Sparks of rage give way to a fiery attraction when Joe and Alex meet head-on. But just as a volatile passion begins flaring between them, the discovery of a shocking murder with ties to the past rocks the county -- and cuts frighteningly close to home when Neely and Eli disappear. Alex and Joe have only each other to rely on as they search frantically for their loved ones. What they don't know is that they are racing against time, too. Because the evil that lurks beneath the bucolic surface of Paradise County has once again raised its gruesome head -- and now Alex is targeted as the next victim.

With an ailing mother to care for, she takes the first job she can find: research assistant to District Attorney Scott Buchanan. The details of the case are engrossing: an entire family -- father, mother, and two children -- disappeared without a trace more than twenty-eight years ago. Except that's not all: the mother in a photo Lisa finds could be her own twin. Before Lisa can learn more, a series of catastrophes strikes close to home, and she realizes that finding the photo has put her in terrible danger.
