Every morning, Fred climbs three flights of stairs--up to his rooftop in Brooklyn, New York--and greets the members of his enormous family: "Good morning, my bees, my darlings!" His honeybee workers are busy--they tend the hive, feed babies, and make wax rooms. They also forage in flowers abloom across Brooklyn . . . so that, one day, Fred can make his famous honey, something the entire neighborhood looks forward to tasting. Lela Nargi's beautifully written story--accompanied by Kyrsten Brooker's collage-style illustrations--offers an inside look at the life of an endearing beekeeper and the honey-making process. From the Hardcover edition.
When Eva sits on her stoop trying to complete a school assignment by writing about what happens in her neighborhood, she gets a great deal of advice and action.
When Precious is left home alone with a stomachache, she's got nothing but a warning from Mama -- "Don't let nothing or nobody into this house" -- to keep her company. You see, "nothing or nobody" could turn out to be something awful: the Boo Hag! The Boo Hag's got a voice that rumbles like thunder and hair that shoots out like lightning. And she can disguise herself to look like anything. So when the Boo Hag comes calling, will Precious be clever enough to outwit even the trickiest trickster? Here's an oh-so-funny -- and not-too-scary -- story from Newbery Honor-winning author Patricia C. McKissack and Onawumi Jean Moss.
THIS CHARMING, CHILD-CENTRIC book offers a glimpse into a cat's exciting "other" life. In a little girl's fantasy, her cat sneaks away, hops a ship, and sails off to Europe! And someday, when he can talk, he'll tell her all about the amazing things he discovered there . . . like whether or not British cats drink tea . . . and how he strutted down the runway in a Paris fashion show. With facts about each place the cat visits included simply in the rhyming text, and in more detail at the end (including a map charting his route), this is sure to provide a great introduction to travel.
