- Synopsis
- [from inside flaps] The Highlands of Scotland are rich in folk-tales, a legacy from an earlier time and an earlier culture which did not rely on the written word to preserve its history. Gerald Warner has collected and re-told 59 of these stories, a number now appearing in print for the first time. This is history and folklore as it has been preserved in the memories of ordinary people--great events that have fundamentally changed the life of the Scottish nation, local catastrophes, clan feuds, ghostly visitations--all told and retold around the peat fires in lonely crofts. Inevitably in the re-telling the stories have become embroidered and modified, yet they still provide valuable insight into a culture and way of life' only vestiges of which remain within the Scottish Highlands. Now the tradition is almost of the past, and in collecting and editing an important part of the remaining stories Gerald Warner has helped to preserve the Highlands' unique oral inheritance. His work has been complemented by the pupils of Lochgilphead High School whose imaginative drawings bring vividly to life the essential qualities of the region and demonstrate the link of a new generation of Highlanders with the ancient Celtic tradition. Gerald Warner was born in Stirlingshire and is a history graduate of Glasgow University. He spent three years in historical research before becoming a writer and broadcaster. Scottish history is one of his main interests; in an earlier book, Homelands of the Clans, he dealt with the thirty most important clans. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.
