- Synopsis
- In the beginning this novel reads like a comedy of manners set on a university campus in the late 1940s. It soon takes a sobering turn, however, as the specter of anti-Semitism emerges. Dr. Gregory Kitner, professor of English, refuses to leave a "restricted" faculty club, and is fired shortly afterward on a trumped-up charge of "moral turpitude."
