This book is a twist on the old sleeping beauty fairytale. However, Wendy Mass has added some clever plot devices which make it much more interesting. Alternating chapters elucidate the lives of the prince and princes. The prolog is good though a tad vague. The book chronicles how the prince and princes grew up and the prince's mother's ogre blood. Yes, it explains why there was no thing of beauty at the prince's palace but what that adds to the story is hard to tell. The prince's conflicts with Percival is natural and I wish his elimination was better explained. There is also a small logical flaw where a spindle has not been removed from the princess's father's estate. One wonders at the over site but the curse had to be triggered somehow. The book is an interesting read but more as a study to see how it compares to the original sleeping beauty. Written by Pranav Lal
