- Synopsis
- If you're a high-need-for-achievement professional, chances are that the more successful you become, the more scared you are of showing weakness or making a mistake. Making a change or trying something you've never done before becomes a daunting, even paralyzing, prospect. Sometimes it's easier to "sit out the dance" and become a passive observer rather than take on a new direction or initiative that would force you to learn, change, and grow. In this chapter, organizational behavior expert Thomas DeLong encourages achievement-driven professionals to develop what he calls "everyday courage"--an attitude that says life is worth taking the risk inherent in bold action. To keep growing you must (1) overcome your anxiety, (2) gather your courage, and (3) allow yourself to be vulnerable. In addition to inspirational stories, this chapter presents a number of commonsense tactics and small actions that will help you develop the courage you need to get yourself out of paralysis and onto new paths of learning and growth. This chapter was originally published as Chapter 13 of "Flying Without a Net: Turn Fear of Change into Fuel for Success."
