I apologize for mis-ranking the previous review. The book is MUCH better than a 2. -- One other note for teachers: The book usually appeals to girls rather than boys. I've found it helpful to give it as a choice opposite another book with a more "masculine" appeal. :)

Elgin ISD in Texas requires teachers to use a prescribed curriculum created at our regional support centers -- C-Scope. I was first introduced to Ellen Foster through that required curriculum. The story is about a pre-adolescent child who finds a way to become a master of her own fate despite a 1970s American culture that did little to support her needs. Critics are comparing this book to Huckleberry Finn and A Catcher in the Rye. Whether or not this book stands the test of time, the book has engaged many of my students. Kaye Gibbons uses Reader Response techniques to help the reader focus on underlying themes and social issues that need still need attention -- even in our 21st century world. It's an interesting read that brings up lots of issues for us all.
