- Synopsis
- He entered her tent and fell to one knee. "My queen," he murmured, his voice soft and strong. She came to him and felt the shock as their eyes met. She trembled, warmed by his presence, and for one sweet instant they forgot the battle they would fight on the morrow. There was a tremor in her voice as she spoke: "Stand, dear Canis, for I hope you are not only my general, but my friend, too." And then they were in each other's arms, answering with hungry kisses the questions that had gone so long unasked . . . From moor and wetland and heath, ^ from every wild corner of ancient Britain they came, to fight and die... To Nero she was the "Iceni," a savage enemy of Rome's great empire that must be smashed. To the fierce Celtic tribesmen who followed her she was Boadicea, the stone upon which their nation was built. And to Canis, who fought by her side, she was Queen and far more. She was Woman. She was his destiny, just as Britain was hers...
