This is a fast-paced, hardboiled mystery that weaves with agility between the present and the recent past of the blacklist era of the 1950s where betrayal of friendships among the rich and powerful was the name of the game. As is true of the series in general, this mystery is set in Chicago and its suburbs, this time focusing on a small, exclusive community of prominent, wealthy families. Doing a job for a favorite client lands Warshawski in the middle of a murder investigation that brings the federal government knocking at her door and searching her apartment under the authority of the Patriot Act. Meanwhile, her investigation opens a wound that has festered since the 1950s putting a teenaged boy and girl in danger and her own life at risk. This is a case that will cost her something more precious than money... her ideals and trust.
