- This volume, at once a history of Soviet cinema and a primer on the historiographical analysis of secret police files, provides an interesting multi-disciplinary discussion of the police in film, police as film makers and the criminal as subject in the darkest corners of the Soviet police state. Arguing that the levels of implicit and explicit control exercised by secret police authorities in Stalin-era Russia created a cultural framework in which art, literature and film, even those not directly affected by the regime, bore the unmistakable mark of their influence.
