You know William Shakespeare will win through in the end. But how he gets there makes fun reading. <p> This is alternate history with a flair for the mundane. Shakespeare writes to pay the rent, works with people some of whom he dislikes and keeps his head down. The Armada succeeded. Queen Elizabeth is imprisoned and the country occupied. Spies are everywhere. Shakespeare stays away from politics until his loyalty to his country and his ability as a writer are sought. The atmosphere is created with skill.
