- Synopsis
- Ruth Kossoff, at twenty-one, wants only two things-to be loved by David Landau, whom she has known all her life, and to be rich, to escape from the tenement life she shares with her parents and her younger brother Martin. A summer tutorial job in the Stamm household gives her a first taste of the cashmere-wrapped world of those who are so rich that money is taken for granted. It is hard for her to return from the Stamms' luxurious country house to New York City, to St. Marks Place, although David is there - to her mother's patient weariness, her father's fits of rage over Martin's poor marks and lack of ambition, and Martin's growing depression. Then suddenly Ruth's life is irrevocably altered. What happens to someone like Ruth Kossoff, greedy for life and love and caught in a trap of her own making? This is a novel about an ambitious, headstrong woman who, after thirteen years of marriage, finds herself with only half of what she wants. It is about the extent to which people can change and the point beyond which they can't-the point at which selfknowledge becomes merely painful rather than useful. It is also an ironical, frank, and very modern love story.
