- Synopsis
- Despite the careful coachings and plans of her grandmother and her aunt, despite their highly developed techniques and strategy, Gigi commits the unpardonable sin of falling in love with Gaston and of wanting to marry him. Love finally conquers all, and Gigi prevails over her family's and Gaston's natural aversion to the bourgeois marital state. The tale is saved from the mire of sugary sentimentality because of the fact that Gigi is herself so very unconventional. Colette has created a very special type, an adolescent, French Lolita, ambiguously feminine, impertinent and wise. The reader is constantly titillated by Gigi's presence, by the description of her family and its antics.
