- Synopsis
- When Owen Gwynedd moved from Judge L'Hommedieu's to live with Capel Owen in ManOwen, a manner on the isle of Manocc, in the 1870s he made lifelong friends with Lolly, a halfbreed who worked on the manner, and Ysel the daughter of the housekeeper. 'In view of what was to come, it is difficult to believe now that I ever felt contempt or even mild dislike for little Ysel.' Their lives were idyllic until a catastrophe drove Owen from the island. Owen then joined a whaling voyage rich with adventure and lore, after which he attended Yale. During a summer vacation George Prentiss, invited Owen to 'what the Sag Harbor Corrector always referred to airily, in a gem of understatement, as "a little outing in Europe." Owen met some of his cousins in Europe and learned about his family history and was made aware of his responsibilities to restore ManOwen to its former glory.
