- Synopsis
- While sailing toward Papete in their ketch Saracen, John and Rae Ingram find themselves becalmed near a yacht, the Orpheus, and rescue a young man who has rowed his dinghy to the Saracen. Hughie warriner is handsome, charming, boyish, and grieving; he has just buried his wife and another couple at sea after they died of botulism, and the Orpheus is sinking. Rae is all sympathy, but John has nagging suspicions about the young man's tale and decides to go aboard the Orpheus when Hughie is asleep. What follows is a thriller of the highest quality. John finds plenty to deal with on the Orpheus and Rae is alone with Hughie on the saracen with problems of her own. The Ingrams must somehow control their situations and find their way back to each other. Plot and emotion combine to make Dead calm suspenseful, moving, and unforgettable. This book was later made into a movie but the film does not compare with this excellent novel, which critics hail as Charles williams's best thriller.
