- Synopsis
- [From the dust jacket flaps:] Jesse Falkenstein was a prosperous Los Angeles lawyer who didn't need to waste his time playing private eye for some clients who didn't have a legal leg to stand on--or even much money to make it worth his while. But the Lanning case was different. Two nice people had brought up an abandoned child for six years, only to see her legally kidnapped by her unfit young mother, who supposedly had had a sudden change of heart. Something seemed wrong about the case from the beginning--from what Falkenstein could learn, Nonie Johnson just wasn't the maternal type. Her latest job had been at the Tropico Club, a sleazy topless bar, and her friends there claimed she had been about to ditch one boyfriend and take off on a Caribbean cruise with another. And then she had suddenly dropped out of sight. So far, the search for Nonie Johnson had yielded nothing but a series of wild goose chases. And when her former boyfriend turns up murdered, Falkenstein begins to suspect that there is more involved than a simple case of child custody. He had to find Nonie Johnson fast, and he was going to need help. Fortunately, he did have two aces up his sleeve: a brother-in-law on the L.A.P.D. who might be able to sniff out the truth in some very orthodox ways, and some rather unorthodox psychic acquaintances who had their own ways of searching out clues.
