Neanderthal man, known in this alternate history as Sims, never became extinct in north america. In a series of novelettes, Harry Turtledove explores the fascinating social consequences.
We get to see the sims used as slaves (far better workers than the blacks in this history.) We see an earlier time when sims kidnap a pioneer child and the child's father's controversial but peaceful approach to getting his offspring back. And I won't spoil the surprise by telling anything about the other stories.
I loved this book; everything is so believable it makes you want to live in this friendly world, where docile Sim nannies watch your children and bring you cold lemonade in the hot summer sun!
Truly imaginative, this book makes you think about what it means to be human in a whole different light.
