- Synopsis
- The Horsemasters is a novel with a difference, a delightful story which reveals the author's vast fund of equestrian knowledge. Through the eyes of the main character, a young American girl, we see this "most famous riding school in England" as it prepares a group of youngsters for their Horsemastership Certificate. The toil of stable routine, the exacting demands of schoolwork, the seemingly endless theory--all are vividly expressed. We watch the Horsemasters' progress week by week, their individual reactions to disappointment and triumph, to rebuff and congratulation. The school comes to life before us, for the whole story is truly representative of what it so faithfully portrays. One can almost put a name to the school and its setting in the beautiful English countryside, to its instructors and, of course, to its pupils, who may be any one of us. Our attention is brought to dwell upon the work involved in preparation for the Preliminary Instructor's Certificate--the goal towards which all the Horsemasters are striving. This is no Course for fainthearts. It demands real love for the horse, and an acceptance of hard work and little leisure. The Horse-masters are prepared for this, and we watch them progress together as rivals and as comrades. At first it seems an impossibility for all to reach that goal, but systematic training brings its own rewards, and the descriptions of schoolwork, stable management, elementary and advanced jumping cannot fail to interest every reader. One can almost share the feeling of mixed terror and thrill when a pupil negotiates the "grill" for the first time, or of setting out alone on the hazardous cross-country ride; and the final examination itself compels interest. Without realizing the fact, one learns a great deal from this book. It is to the author's credit that one learns with delight.
