- Synopsis
- An attractive family picture centers around Janet, married 18 years to Gordon, after a youthful marriage and divorce, now living in South Carolina with their twin sons and daughter, and living through the love affair that concerns everyone but particularly, David, son of that early marriage and now in Princeton. He brings Angela Cutler, 19, home, thereby jilting his old girl, Sally; they get engaged and he has to cope with her family; a classmate of David's, Raoul, visits them for Christmas, bowls over their Amanda and latches on to Sally; Angela's parents come to visit just as news of the engagement's being broken reaches them; Amanda gets a whirl at Princeton. Then there is a renewed engagement and the wedding-- with armies of the bride's family to be dealt with, with David's father turning up, with its commotion and emotion. Told in the first person, by Janet, with correspondence threading through the incidents, this maintains its good manners along with its warm domesticity, its feminine frailties and a household happiness.
