Had I not been reading this for a bookclub, it would have been one of the rare books I don't finish. The research into circus life conjures some interesting detail, but the story - a simple love story - is so predictably pre-determined as a happy ending that it is embarassing. The death of the bad guy, which makes way for the happiness of the lovers, is so contrived it can only be regarded as a parody of itself. Unbelievable. Unpalatable.
