- Synopsis
- 'Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, you are about to embark upon an odyssey.' So began Gerald Boyle's opening statement at the trial of Jeffrey Dahmer on 30 January, 1992. They were heavy, ominous words to use in a cosy courtroom in Milwaukee, where lawyers habitually lounge and banter, and in summer address the judge in shirt-sleeves. But this was not summer, and there was nothing remotely cosy or comforting about the case which Mr Boyle had to present.
