- Synopsis
- This novel explores the friendship between Marie Curie, the Nobel-Prize-winning chemist, and her assistant Blanche Wittman. As the novel opens, Blanche is slowly dying of the effects of exposure to radioactive minerals. Her legs and one arm have been amputated, but she spends her remaining days passionately filling notebooks with her life story. Blanche spent many years as a psychiatric patient at the famous Salpetriere Hospital in Paris. There she became the medium and lover of Dr. J. M. Charcot. Curie, too, recalls an intense love affair which restored and then shattered her after the death of her husband Pierre. Blanche's notebooks weave together the two women's stories and create a portrait of an unusual friendship.
