The Last Days is a 300 page modern magics novel written by the popular author Scott Westerfeld and first published in 2006. This work follows Westerfeld's novel Peeps and is set in the same world, a New York City that is being overwhelmed by an apocalyptic wave of rats, disease, and demonic decay. Razorbill's summary reads as follows:
The summer is stifling, and strange things are happening in New York City. Rats have taken over the borough of Brooklyn. A weird, black, oily substance is oozing from fire hydrants and faucets. A mysterious epidemic is turning people into raving cannibals. And the signs say that worse is coming ... In the midst of all this, five teenagers are trying to ignore the madness and concentrate on something really important: their new band. But there's no way to escape the chaos, especially when it turns out their lead singer has the disease--and her songs may hold the key to the entire chain of disasters. Will their music stave off the end of the world? Or summon it? Set against the apocalypse that began in Peeps, The Last Days is about five teenagers who find themselves creating the soundtrack for the end of the world.
