- Synopsis
- BeltrÁn Soler is from Chile, a land in constant movement. He is also a seismologist who knows more about tectonic plates than about life. On his way to a conference in Tokyo, he stops in L.A. where he misses his plane, and experiences a tremor that makes him lose his balance. He suddenly begins to remember the fifty most important movies of his life: the ones he saw during his adolescence in the sixties and seventies. From Dumbo to Close Encounters of the Third Kind, including the noisy catastrophe films and the futuristic films of the 1970s, BeltrÁn finally connects with his past, and the history of his eccentric and dysfunctional family. Through memories and B-films BeltrÁn comes to terms with the epic nature of the Soler family. Set in Nixon's suburban California, and Pinochet's cold Santiago de Chile, this quick and contemporary novel is about two languages, two worlds, and two families that watch the same movies.
