- Synopsis
- Yaa, an old woman, is the only one who takes time to talk to the sky god, asking him for rain and other things the villagers need. When Yaa, who loves to talk while she works, hits the sky god one too many times with her pestle, he disappears high up into the heavens and the villagers decide to build a tower to heaven to find him. Yaa and the people of her village have to get up to the sky to talk to the sky god. Yaa decides that the best thing to do is to build a tower all the way to heaven-but with what should it be built? Yaa thinks mortars, which look like large bowls, are the answer-but when all the mortars are stacked up, she finds the tower is still one mortar short of heaven. Why not take one from the bottom? If the tower isn't tall enough, then why not take another and another and another from the bottom and add them to the top? The joke is on Yaa. In Africa, the story of Tower to Heaven is so well known that most regions have a version of the tale. Ms. Dee's interpretation has its roots in Ghana, West Africa. The pictures have been carefully described.
