- Synopsis
- The three well-known editors have gathered a variety of multiple authors, multiple transgender issues, multiple perspectives. Some of their writings are included. A compendium of essays and stories, some personal, some political, all ages. Although the focus is gender issues, the traditional lesbian butch and femme roles are included as butch status becomes questioned as lesbian or male-to-female transsexual.

This is a popular introductory reader for transgender individuals (and gender studies students) as it includes a wide range of topics. Because of that, none are deeply investigated. The three editors themselves represent an range of interests: one is a transsexual political activist: Riki Anne Wilchins, who is quoted and acknowledged in many other books ("Read My Lips: Sexual Subversion and the End of Gender" will be coming to Bookshare). Another is Clare Howell, who is also transgendered, but writes more from the personal perspective. Then there is Joan Nestle, flagrant femme lesbian, who has written several books including "Persistant Desire: The Butch/Femme Reader." The three have gathered a variety of authors, most of whom are not well-known in their own rights. A few pieces are written by drag queens and further explain their culture, street prostition life and politics, and their role in the infamous Stonewall Uprising, inarguably the start of gay and lesbian civil rights protest. However, as the drag queens note, they are marginalized and excluded by the gays and lesbians. Some pieces are more personal, some more political: a wide range of all types of "genderqueers" are included. A good introductory anthology.
