In this story a young man by the name of Richard Perry leaves home to join the American troops in Vietnam. Because of his medical profile which states that he has a bad knee and hemophilia, Perry expects a job sitting behind a desk somewhere doing paperwork. Perry gets a nasty shock when he discovers that the army knows nothing about either of these medical problems. Perry suffers several personal injuries and also witnesses the death of two of his fellow troops. He also suffers internal conflict - is it right to kill another person? At the end of the story, the troops that began as complete strangers share a unique experience. They have also become friends. This book is a bit too wordy for my taste, but near the end, you just get the wow feeling that only comes from a good story.
