- Synopsis
- This historical novel focuses on the final years of the 17th-century Dutch painter, Rembrandt van Rijn, as told by his friend and physician, Jan van Loon. Rich with detail about the life and culture of Amsterdam, the story weaves among the lives of van Loon and Rembrandt and their many friends and acquaintances. The narrative is enriched by the narrator's wry commentary on social pretensions, religious hypocrisy, human frailty, and human passion. Dr. van Loon is determined to find a way to anesthetize patients during surgery, and for Rembrandt, to paint is to live.
