I don't often read historical biographies, but this one was truly captivating. Among many things, the book shows us how even the seemingly smallest acts of kindness can go a very long way. There were many moments in Deer's life where the tiniest, sometimes seemingly insignificant, bits of help and encouragement, from others made the difference between life and death. The book demonstrates how, even in the worst of circumstances, all of us have the choice about whether to do evil or good. The author's story is especially inspiring because it's a great example of tremendous determination and perseverance. Even though the book has some truly sad parts, these are balanced out by moments of hope and an overall message of transcendence.
