- Synopsis
- FULL OF TRUTH, humor and love, this rich and varied story of an Oklahoma town in the mid-twentieth century may quite possibly become a famous American novel. "The long summer," as created in the pages of this book, brought many things to many people. To George Adams it brought both a melancholy and depressed fortieth birthday and, later on, a new sense of identification and purpose; to his sons the summer brought tragedy and the beginning of growth; and to his wife it brought a much needed confirmation of family and future. However, this fine novel is a great deal more than the beguiling account of one summer in the life of a particular human being just as Main Street was much more than the story of what happened to Carol Kennicott. Most readers will find it hard to forget the lovely Venida Pierce, who was lonely even before her husband left for the wheat harvests. George's two sons, so carefully and lovingly drawn, are reminiscent of Booth Tarkington's writing of the world of boyhood fifty years ago. The love story of George's young sister-in-law and her not-so-young war hero introduces a young couple who know the difference between love and sex and who display a brand of realistic romanticism all their own. The Long Summer of George Adams is a wise and strong bookâas tender and cruel, sad and funny and tragic as life itself.
