The elements are there: painful past, vow of vengeance, passionate love that seems doomed. Unfortunately, the past fails to haunt, the vow fails to convince, the loss of love fails to worry. Jeanne Montague is a gifted storyteller, an excellent painter of settings and characters, but this one didn't sweep me along. I'm disappointed, for I have read `The Clock Tower`, and I know she can do it. Sorry, Ms. Montague, just a 3 for this one.
