Drake (political science, U. of California at San Diego) synthesizes and interprets the history and political science literatures on the institutional history of democracy in Latin America over the past two centuries. Working in a broadly chronological fashion, he identifies commonalities and differences across regions and proposes a typology of types of democracy. He also critiques the political science literature for its explanatory failures concerning the nature of democratic change and proposes his own explanations regarding the emergence of both protected (for the elites) and populist democracy.
