This children's book is a wonderfully told tale narrated from the unique perspective of dogs. The exciting, touching story revolves around the dogs and people of Steamboat and their encounter with a wolf. McKinley is happily caring for his human pup, Jack, and the dogs in his pack in town when a wolf arrives hoping to lure dogs to join her family of wolves which has become too small. Jack wants to sneak away to live in the wild with the wolf, an abused Greyhound is trying to flee from her cruel master, and an Irish Setter wants to prove he should be pack leader by tracking the wolf so the townspeople who fear her can shoot her. McKinley is kept busy protecting the greyhound, preventing Jack from trying to join the wolf in the midst of a snowstorm, and helping the wounded wolf escape to the safety of the wilderness. All the while, he wonders if he'd rather run wild or remain loyal to humans. At the end of the story there are discussion questions and suggested activities as well as a list of recommended books by Avi. You will find these books and more than a dozen other books by Avi in the Bookshare collection.
