The stories of 11 American low-income women who started their own businesses as a way out of poverty echo an entrepreneurial trend that has been successful in developing countries. Writing for a general audience, Shirk (a journalist) and Wadia (a program director at the Ms. Foundation) provide profiles and photographs of the entrepreneurs, each of whom has received assistance from nonprofit business organizations associated with the Ms. Foundation for Women, a funding group for microenterprise programs in the United States. Microenterprise resources are listed in an appendix. Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc. , Portland, OR (booknews. com)
