- Synopsis
- An electrifying first novel that shocks by its language, its circumstances, and its brutal honesty, Push recounts a young black street-girl's horrendous and redemptive journey through a Harlem inferno. For Precious Jones, 16 and pregnant with her father's child, miraculous hope appears and the world begins to open up for her when a courageous, determined teacher bullies, cajoles, and inspires her to learn to read, to define her own feelings and set them down in a diary.

Although this book is very disturbing and intended for adult readers, it is one of the best books I have ever read. As a white middle class woman that grew up with parents who would never even think of doing to me what Precious's parents did to her, not to mention teachers all through school who cared about me, it was troubling to realize how our society fails so many people, blaming them for their poverty, and claiming their only hope is to get some demeaning low-paying job as a house attendant. I think this book, written entirely in Precious's voice, should be required reading for every social worker, school teacher, and person working in a welfare office. This book really opened my eyes to the fact that we have no right to judge these people, especially since their circumstances are often the result of unimaginable abuse, which is no fault of their own. Therefore, this book is a perfect example of how lives can be transformed when there is someone who genuinely cares about their future like Ms. Rain.
