- Synopsis
- Ira Lessing has been gone for two days. This upstanding citizen of Covington--son of a leading family, successful businessman, philanthropist, city commissioner-- left his riverfront home on a steamy July night and never returned. His wife and his business partner ask Harry Stoner to find him. When Lessing's bloodied car turns up in the railroad station parking lot, the routine investigation takes a sinister turn. As his search continues, Stoner begins to uncover the truth: Ira Lessing has a dark secret that belies the decent, measured life he's lived. The gradual discovery of Lessing's secret and the explosive effect it has on Lessing's family, friends, and on Stoner himself makes Extenuating Circumstances a real and frightening exploration of one kind of contemporary hell.
