Does it say anything about this book that I began reading it immediately after finishing its prequel? I simply must know what happened to the Templetons, to Elliott Hoover. Janice tries to pick up the pieces of her life and maintain the hope of Bill's recovery. Her once strong, confident and loving husband is a spiritual wreck. Suddenly, he gets interested in reading, starting with Keats, but rapidly branching into studies of Buddhism. Janice must scour the shelf of the public library and bring him tomes about reincarnation and dissertations about `the dead`. Her own fragile equilibrium is shaken by Bill's obsessive foraging into the past as he applies his demented frenzy into analysing what's happened to him. In despair, Janice tries to find Elliott Hoover. She goes to India, from Benares to a war-torn village where she nearly dies. Hoover persuades Janice and two psychologists to join him in a dangerous gamble to save Bill's sanity.
