The Hornet's Nest (Family Tree #5)
by Sally WatsonIn 1773, Ronald Cameron and his sister Lauchlin are busily waging their own private war against the oppressive Sassenach (English soldiers) as the two young Highlanders work and play around their Scottish home. Their parents fought the English invaders and supported the Stuart King Jamie and Bonnie Prince Charlie. Now Ronald and Laughlin believe it is their turn to carry on the struggle, especially when their elderly cousin Matthew from Virginia comes to visit and encourages their rebellion and love for liberty. However, when the sister and brother team get into real trouble with the occupation forces, their parents have no choice but to send them to Virginia to stay with their loyalist aunt, Lavinia Lennox. The characters in Sally Watson’s Family Tree Series are all a part of the same family, the Lennoxes, and Cousin Matthew in this book is even studying his family genealogy. So there’s a running thread of family heritage and pugnacious, spunky traits that are handed down through the family, especially among the girls.
The Horrible Bag of Terrible Things #1 (The Horrible Bag Series #1)
by Rob RenzettiFrom the creator of My Life As a Teenage Robot comes a middle-grade horror story about a horrible bag, the spine-chilling world hidden within it, and a terrifying adventure into the world of GrahBhag.Perfect for fans of Coraline, the Spiderwick Chronicles, and Small Spaces. When Zenith finds a strange, unsettling bag at his front door, he's not sure where it came from or who sent it to him. He knows better than to expect his overprotective older sister Apogee to help him figure it out, because ever since she became a teenager, she's been acting more like a parent to him than a sibling. But he certainly did not expect for a horrifying spiderlike creature to emerge from the bag, kidnap Apogee, and drag her inside to the equally horrifying and unsettling world of GrahBhag. Zenith sets off into the bag to bring her back but soon finds a bizarre realm where malicious forests, a trio of blood-drinking mouths, and a sentient sawdust-stuffed giant are lurking within the seams. And from every corner of the world come whispers of the Great Wurm, an eldritch horror with a godlike hold over the creatures of GrahBhag, who seems to have a dark, insidious purpose for Apogee. With the help of a greedy, earwax-nibbling gargoyle, Zenith will have to save Apogee from the Great Wurm and help them both escape the horrible bag before it's too late. With a combination of dry, absurdist humor and no-holds-barred horror, Rob Renzetti has crafted a delightfully imaginative fantasy world that will hook readers as surely as it will send chills down their spines.

The Horsecatcher
by Mari SandozPraised for swift action and beauty of language, The Horsecatcher is Mari Sandoz's first novel about the Indians she knew so well. Without ever leaving the world of a Cheyenne tribe in the 1830s, she creates a youthful protagonist many readers will recognize in themselves. Young Elk is expected to be a warrior, but killing even an enemy sickens him. He would rather catch and tame the mustangs that run in herds. Sandoz makes it clear that his determination to be a horsecatcher will require a moral and physical courage equal to that of any warrior. And if he must earn the right to live as he wishes, he must also draw closer to family and community.

Newbery Medal Honor Book
The Horsemasters
by Don StanfordThe Horsemasters is a novel with a difference, a delightful story which reveals the author's vast fund of equestrian knowledge. Through the eyes of the main character, a young American girl, we see this "most famous riding school in England" as it prepares a group of youngsters for their Horsemastership Certificate. The toil of stable routine, the exacting demands of schoolwork, the seemingly endless theory--all are vividly expressed. We watch the Horsemasters' progress week by week, their individual reactions to disappointment and triumph, to rebuff and congratulation. The school comes to life before us, for the whole story is truly representative of what it so faithfully portrays. One can almost put a name to the school and its setting in the beautiful English countryside, to its instructors and, of course, to its pupils, who may be any one of us. Our attention is brought to dwell upon the work involved in preparation for the Preliminary Instructor's Certificate--the goal towards which all the Horsemasters are striving. This is no Course for fainthearts. It demands real love for the horse, and an acceptance of hard work and little leisure. The Horse-masters are prepared for this, and we watch them progress together as rivals and as comrades. At first it seems an impossibility for all to reach that goal, but systematic training brings its own rewards, and the descriptions of schoolwork, stable management, elementary and advanced jumping cannot fail to interest every reader. One can almost share the feeling of mixed terror and thrill when a pupil negotiates the "grill" for the first time, or of setting out alone on the hazardous cross-country ride; and the final examination itself compels interest. Without realizing the fact, one learns a great deal from this book. It is to the author's credit that one learns with delight.
