by Aline Coelho SanchesArtistic Migration: Reframing Post-War Italian Art, Architecture, and Design in Brazil investigates a selection of works by Italian artists and architects, and an art critic and dealer, who immigrated to Brazil after World War II, and were involved in the first activities and opportunities created by the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP).Although foreigners, these experts, namely Bramante Buffoni, Roberto Sambonet, Lina Bo Bardi, Giancarlo Palanti, and Pietro Maria Bardi, were engaged in the construction of paths for Brazilian art, architecture, and design, in production marked by the intertwining of artistic disciplines. By examining the works produced between 1946 and 1991, and focusing on the relationship between art and architecture, with previously unexplored cases, the text investigates how these actors engaged in the dilemmas of Brazilian culture and became part of its invention. The intention is to understand the nature and meaning of this recognizable experience, the continuities of and ruptures from modern architectural, art and design ideals, pre-war experience, and immigration, illuminating a complex framework of relationships with local ideas.The approach and the extensive archival research in Italy and Brazil adopted for the book sheds new light on critically rethinking and reframing Italian and Brazilian cultural events, and will be of interest to architects, researchers, teachers, and students interested in the history of architecture, museums, design, and art.

As risk carriers, insurers pay claims for climate change related losses – such as property damage caused by windstorms, flooding, and wildfires – which have been increasing in frequency and severity.As major institutional investors, insurance companies invest in assets that may be increasingly vulnerable to climate risks. Insurance regulators across the globe have therefore started to require insurance companies to identify, manage, and report on climate change risks that could pose a threat to their financial stability. However, managing and reporting on the effect of climate risk on an insurer’s balance sheet is an inward-looking perspective that does not stem climate change. It needs to be paired with an outward-looking perspective that takes account of the insurance industry’s impact on the environment and the insurance industry’s capacity to influence what policyholders, investee enterprises, and other business partners do to address climate change challenges. For the insurance industry, the key components of positive outward impact are ‘impact underwriting’ and ‘impact investment.’ This book sets out the current legal and regulatory landscape for impact underwriting and impact investment. by Vasant Bhagwant Karnikझ्यां-झ्याक रूसो लिखित (SOCIAL CONTRACT) या ग्रंथाचा मराठी अनुवाद “सामाजिक करार” हे पुस्तक धार्मिक आणि भौतिक दोन्ही सत्ताधाऱ्यांना अधिक आक्षेपार्ह वाटले. सामाजिक कराराची कल्पना मान्य केली म्हणजे राजांच्या दैवी अधिकाराला स्थानच उरत नाही; राजसत्तेचा नैतिक पाया नष्ट होतो. म्हणून फ्रेंच राज्यकर्त्यांना ते पुस्तक फार भीतीदायक वाटले. पुस्तकाच्या वाचनामुळे लोकांच्या मनात क्रांतीच्या कल्पना स्फुरतील आणि बंडाचा वणवा पेटेल अशी त्यांना धास्ती वाटली. फ्रेंच राज्यकर्त्यांची ही धास्ती खोटी ठरली नाही. १७८९ साली फ्रेंच राज्यक्रांतीचा वडवानल पेटला तेव्हा क्रांतिकारकांच्या तोंडी होते ते रूसाचे नाव आणि त्यांची प्रेरकशक्ती होती ती त्याच्या सामाजिक करार या पुस्तकातील तत्त्वे व घोषणा! फ्रेंच राज्यक्रांतीच पाया जो घातला तो बुद्धिवादी विद्वानांनी घडवून आणलेल्या वैचारिक क्रांतीने; परंतु प्रत्यक्ष क्रांतीच्या दिवसात क्रांतिकारकांच्या मनावर अधिक पगडा होता तो रूसोच्या विचारांचा आणि त्याच्या मनोवृत्तीचा. क्रांतीच्या संगराच्या वेळी विवेकशील शुद्ध बुद्धीपेक्षा लोकांना हवी असते भावनोत्कट क्रियाशीलता. रूसोची मदार होती बुद्धीपेक्षा भावनेवर. त्यामुळे राज्यक्रांतीवर त्याचा अधिक प्रभाव पडला आणि क्रांतीचा अग्रदूत म्हणून त्याची जगभर ख्याती झाली.

Pradhanइंग्रजी भाषेवर माझे प्रेम असले, तरी मराठीत लिहिणे मला अधिक आवडते. महाराष्ट्रातील विद्यार्थ्यांसाठी, तरुण कार्यकर्त्यांसाठी आणि सर्वसामान्य वाचकांसाठी स्वातंत्र्यसंग्रामाचा इतिहास इंग्रजीतील माझ्या पुस्तकापेक्षा अधिक सविस्तरपणे लिहावा, असे मला तीव्रतेने वाटले. राष्ट्र सेवादलात पूर्वी काम करताना स्वातंत्र्य लढ्याच्या कथांमध्ये रंगून जाणारे सेवादल सैनिक आणि कार्यकर्ते यांची आठवण मला झाली. त्यांच्याशी माझे जसे अतूट नाते होते, तसेच ना विविध आघाड्यांवर काम करणाऱ्या तरुण कार्यकर्त्यांशी आणि सध्याच्या विद्यार्थीवर्गाशी जुळावे, अशी ओढ माझ्या मनात निर्माण झाली, त्यातूनच हे 'स्वातंत्र्यसंग्रामाचे महाभारत' लिहिले गेले. हे वाचल्यावर आपण भारताच्या स्वातंत्र्यलढ्याचा अधिक अभ्यास करावा, त्यावरील अनेक ग्रंथ वाचावेत, महत्त्वपूर्ण राजकीय घटनांचा स्वतंत्रपणे अर्थ लावावा, आपल्या देशाच्या इतिहासाचा चिकित्सक रीतीने अभ्यास करावा अशी आकांक्षा वाचकांच्या मनात निर्माण झाली, तर मला धन्यता वाटेल.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj: छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराज
by Krishnarao Arjun Keluskarगुरुवर्य कृष्णराव अर्जुन केळूसकर गेल्या शतकातील एक महान चरित्रकार आहेत. छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराजांचे मराठीतील पहिले विस्तृत चरित्र त्यांनी लिहिले. विख्यात चरित्रकार डॉ. धनंजय कीर लिहितात, 'केळूसकरकृत शिवचरित्राएवढे समग्र व सविस्तर चरित्र आजपर्यंत कोणीही लिहिले नाही. तसेच गौतमबुद्ध आणि संत तुकाराम यांचे पहिले चरित्रकारही केळूसकरच आहेत.' राजकीय ऋषी मामा परमानंद, न्यायमूर्ती माधवराव रानडे, महाराजा सयाजीराव गायकवाड यांनी गुरुवर्य केळूसकरांच्या लेखणी व विचारांची प्रशंसा केली. ते धर्मशास्त्र, अर्थशास्त्र, शिक्षणशास्त्र, इतिहास आणि तत्त्वज्ञान या विषयांवर ग्रंथ लिहिणारे प्रकांड पंडित होते. पण बहुजनसमाजाच्या लेखकाच्या वाट्याला येणारी फरपट केळूसकरांच्या वाट्याला आली. महाराष्ट्राच्या वाङमयमहर्षीची उपेक्षाच झाली. छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराजांचे साधार प्रदीर्घ चरित्र लिहिताना केळूसकरांनी ऐतिहासिक सत्याच्या आधारे विवेकशील मांडणी केली आहे. भारतभूमीला यवनसत्तेपासून मुक्त करण्याचा सत्संकल्प केलेल्या या महाप्रतापशाली वीराने सर्व जाती-धर्मांच्या मदतीने, मुत्सद्दीपणा व गनिमी कावा या कौशल्याने हिंदवी स्वराज्य उभारिले. कल्पक प्रशासनाच्या आधारे जनसामान्यांचा कैवार आणि गुणवंतांचा आदर करत शत्रू पक्षांवर मात केली. मराठ्यांचे नाव जगाच्या इतिहासात अजरामर करून ठेवलेल्या छत्रपती शिवरायांचे मराठीतील हे चरित्र एक उत्तम उदाहरण आहे. केळूसकर गुरुजींचा हा ग्रंथ म्हणजे केवळ शिवाजी राजांचा चरित्रग्रंथ नसून त्यात इतिहास, भूगोल, समाजव्यवस्था, राज्यव्यवस्था, अर्थकारण, नेतृत्व, चारित्र्य, मानवी संबंध अशा अनेक विषयांची तपशीलवार मांडणी आहे. हा युगपुरुष महाराष्ट्रदेशी अवतरला हे इथल्या रयतेचे भाग्य! आज राष्ट्रउभारणीसाठी देशातल्या प्रत्येक तरुणाने छत्रपतींच्या व्यूहनीतीचा साकल्याने विचार व अंगीकार करणे क्रमप्राप्त आहे.
