One Grand Noise: Boxing Day in the Anglicized Caribbean World (Caribbean Studies Series)

by Jerrilyn McGregory

Winner of the 2022 Chicago Folklore PrizeFor many, December 26 is more than the day after Christmas. Boxing Day is one of the world’s most celebrated cultural holidays. As a legacy of British colonialism, Boxing Day is observed throughout Africa and parts of the African diaspora, but, unlike Trinidadian Carnival and Mardi Gras, fewer know of Bermuda’s Gombey dancers, Bahamian Junkanoo, Dangriga’s Jankunú and Charikanari, St. Croix’s Crucian Christmas Festival, and St. Kitts’s Sugar Mas. One Grand Noise: Boxing Day in the Anglicized Caribbean World delivers a highly detailed, thought-provoking examination of the use of spectacular vernacular to metaphorically dramatize such tropes as “one grand noise,” “foreday morning,” and from “back o’ town.” In cultural solidarity and an obvious critique of Western values and norms, revelers engage in celebratory sounds, often donning masks, cross-dressing, and dancing with abandon along thoroughfares usually deemed anathema to them. Folklorist Jerrilyn McGregory demonstrates how the cultural producers in various island locations ritualize Boxing Day as a part of their struggles over identity, class, and gender relations in accordance with time and space. Based on ethnographic study undertaken by McGregory, One Grand Noise explores Boxing Day as part of a creolization process from slavery into the twenty-first century. McGregory traces the holiday from its Egyptian origins to today and includes chapters on the Gombey dancers of Bermuda, the evolution of Junkanoo/Jankunú in The Bahamas and Belize, and J'ouvert traditions in St. Croix and St. Kitts. Through her exploration of the holiday, McGregory negotiates the ways in which Boxing Day has expanded from small communal traditions into a common history of colonialism that keeps alive a collective spirit of resistance.

One Great Truth: Finding Your Answers to Life

by Jonathan Falwell

Jonathan Falwell carries on the legacy of his father—the internationally known fundamentalist and founder of the Moral Majority, Jerry Falwell—in this book about the single most important truth for believers.Reverend Falwell affirms in One Great Truth that regardless of situations Christians face, there is a simple, underlying, foundational truth that will enable them to have the strength needed to carry on and bring purpose to their lives.Above all else, it seems as if people are always looking to be significant. They are trying to determine what it will take to make a difference, to be a leader. In the midst of this challenge, people also face the trials and tribulations of life that seem to bring great discouragement. While many look to various sources for the answer of how to succeed and how to make it through their problems, the only answer that can actually bring success is found within the words of the Bible. The one great truth is that our focus must be on Christ. When everything we do revolves around serving Him, we find the great answers to all of life’s mysteries. Within the Bible we find the hope we need to forge ahead, despite life’s challenges and disappointments. The one great truth is that with God, all things are possible, and He will give us the strength and abilities we need to succeed.

One Hand on the Claret Jug: How They Nearly Won the Open

by Norman Dabell

Everyone remembers a winner, especially when victory comes in the oldest major golf championship in the world. But what about the players who got to the brink and then let the ancient trophy slip through their fingers? The Open has always featured triumph and disaster since it began in 1860 and this book is all about the latter of those 'two impostors'. From Doug Sanders' missed three-footer in 1970 to Monty's brave bid to finally end his major wait in 2005, at last the Open's hard-luck stories can be told. What happened when the chips were down for Tony Jacklin and how did it affect his major chances from then on? Whose 'air-shot' possibly cost him the Open? Why did Tom Watson hit a two-iron at the Road Hole? How could a marshal have cost Bernhard Langer his best chance of winning an Open? Why didn't Jesper Parnevik check the leaderboard in 1994? Who had a vision he was going to sink one of the most famous putts in Open history? Why did Jean Van de Velde have such a nightmare at the Barry Burn at Carnoustie in 1999? Read about those who had one hand on the Claret Jug but, in the end, didn't lift it in triumph.

One Man Against the World: The Tragedy of Richard Nixon

by Tim Weiner

The New York Times BestsellerA shocking and riveting look at one of the most dramatic and disastrous presidencies in US history, from Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner Tim WeinerBased largely on documents declassified only in the last few years, One Man Against the World paints a devastating portrait of a tortured yet brilliant man who led the country largely according to a deep-seated insecurity and distrust of not only his cabinet and congress, but the American population at large. In riveting, tick-tock prose, Weiner illuminates how the Vietnam War and the Watergate controversy that brought about Nixon's demise were inextricably linked. From the hail of garbage and curses that awaited Nixon upon his arrival at the White House, when he became the president of a nation as deeply divided as it had been since the end of the Civil War, to the unprecedented action Nixon took against American citizens, who he considered as traitorous as the army of North Vietnam, to the infamous break-in and the tapes that bear remarkable record of the most intimate and damning conversations between the president and his confidantes, Weiner narrates the history of Nixon's anguished presidency in fascinating and fresh detail. A crucial new look at the greatest political suicide in history, One Man Against the World leaves us not only with new insight into this tumultuous period, but also into the motivations and demons of an American president who saw enemies everywhere, and, thinking the world was against him, undermined the foundations of the country he had hoped to lead.
