Bookshare Beyond High School

Transitioning from High School

Transitioning from high school to college is a stressful time for any student and it is normal to feel like you don’t have all the answers. To help ease our Bookshare users into life after high school, we have put together resources that will start you on your journey.

Can I use Bookshare after I graduate from high school?

  • YES! Bookshare is free for all US students--including college, vocational programs, and adult education programs. Membership is only $50 a year for all other users.

How do I get the books I need?

  • Request books through your school's Disability Support Services (DSS) Office or directly through Bookshare's Request a Book form.

Disability accommodations differ widely based on your path after high school. In high school, accommodations are set up through your teachers and parents using the IEP or 504 process. In college, the student must self-advocate for themselves and start the accommodation process by contacting the person/office on campus in charge of accommodations, often the DSS Office.

Remember, although heading to college right out of high school may be the most conventional route, it is not the right path for every student. There are many different paths you can take after high school: going to trade school, joining the military, finding an internship, or starting a business.
