Step 3: Proofread a Book
As the proofreader, you will identify and correct scanning mistakes and make sure the file is formatted properly to upload to Bookshare. Once you've proofed the file completely, check it in.
Proofreading Check List
Read on for a checklist of what to fix when proofreading. Keep in mind that not every item on the checklist will be present in every book, but the first four will be. Click each item for more information, details, instructions, and screenshots.
- Copyright information is present
- Title page is present
- Page breaks are in the correct format
- Font sizes are adjusted for navigation
- Images are removed
- Blank pages are retained and correctly marked
- The table of contents is correctly formatted
- Tabs are replaced with a single space
- Garbage characters are removed
- Bullets are changed to asterisks
- Scanning errors are corrected
- Bolding/italics errors are corrected
- Squished-together words have been separated
- Separated words are connected
- Word spacing is correct
- Words split between pages are connected
- Footnotes and endnotes are formatted correctly
- Scanners' notes are removed
