- Synopsis
- This is an essay toward a new understanding of the long and continuing attempts of Africans and African descendants to possess themselves and the new land. This essay in historical reconstruction grows organically and chronologically out of an earlier book, Before The Mayflower. But there are several differences between this study and Before The Mayflower. First of all and most important of all, this is a developmental history instead of a chronological history. I have been interested here in the forces and events that made black America what it is today. And since black America was of central importance in the shaping of white America, I have dealt at some length with some of the forgotten pages of white history and Indian history.
