- Synopsis
- Burton (English, California State U., Chico) examines the fiction of four contemporary multicultural writers: Kazuo Ishiguro, Bessie Head, Bharati Mukherjee, and Salman Rushdie. His analysis centers on the unique ways in which each of the authors explores and articulates a literal and metaphorical "floating world" in which the boundaries between various binary opposites are blurred. Burton developed this idea of the floating world as a reinterpretation of the Japanese concept of ukiyo.
